Due to it's geographical position, Portugal is blessed with some seriously sweet swells throughout most of the year, we should know as some of our concierges live in Portugal, You can drive up the coast along 600km+ of open beach and concealed bays. The whole coast is teaming with unknown spots begging to be found. You don't even have to go very far from famous/crowded beaches to find yourself alone with possibly an even better wave than 20-40 people are fighting for five minutes down the road.
All you need in Portugal is a little spirit and you'll be rewarded. The best swells come in late winter early spring.
If you think the only thing you can do in Portugal is surf, you are in for a big surprise!
Espinho is a lively beach resort where you have a choice of activities. You can laze on the beach, surf the Atlantic breakers, play a round of golf at Portugal's oldest course or gamble the night away at the casino.
Praia de Baia is the closest beach and currently holds Blue Flag status with easy access for wheeled visitors. The breakers here are pretty good too so it is a popular surfing spot. Equipment can be hired at nearby surf shops.
Espinho has gone through a lot of changes and the recent construction put the town to sleep but now Espinho is waking up with fun events and activities. Royalty Enterprises chose Espinho as the official host for the 2008 Forces of Nature Lifeguards Challenge. Along with competitors, thousands of active surf lifesaving enthusiasts and spectators flock to Espinho, to watch the best teams of lifeguards battle the forces of nature and take home the title "Forces of Nature".
This 2 day event features plenty of beach entertainment, challenging competitions and nightlife options.
Alentejo is a long stretch of coastline, reaching from southern Lisbon down to the southern coast of Portugal. Although its not quite famous for surfing, there are still many waves to be found, and expanses of unexplored beaches to trek. And best of all, those waves are generally not crowded which means more waves for you to tackle.
The northern breaks are gentle and smaller, the sapphire-colored water guarded by scenic cliffs. For larger waves, head south of city center.
Longboarders especially will love Cogumelo, a small, gorgeous beach town where a long, meandering wave breaks at the rivermouth
Algarve is in the southernmost part of Portugal. Soaked in radiant sun, sultry sand and trendy restaurants, this tourist favorite has some incredible waves. Though the beaches might be crowded, a little exploration can result in finding great spots, and with less people. Also, because it is more of a tourist-town, when a big swell rolls through, the breaks usually empty out. Relax at Praia da Bordeira which is a gorgeous beach on the western coast, Praia da Bordeira offers a slow left-handed wave at low tide then picks up with fast and hollow right-handers at high tide.

Ericeira, is about 50 km north of Lisbon and is also the Mecca of Portuguese surfing. There are a number of world-class waves crammed into a few-kilometer stretch of coastline. The WQS (international surfing competition) holds one of their best competitions at (Ribera das’Ilhas).
A good place to start your surfing adventure is at Foz do Lizandro, this river-mouth break is usually smaller than the other spots, but is rarely crowded. If you can really surf than you can head out to Coxos, the surf here gets very big and very heavy, as well as very local.
